Can anyone help?

I have just fitted a DVD writer to my PC - running XP. I now have 2 drives - the first a DVD player (no problems) and the new DVD writer. Problem is when i try to play a DVD in the new writer the sound is distorted and blocky, also the video stutters very slightly. It was the same on audio CD's but i fitted a audio lead from the DVD player to the motherboard, chose not to use digital playback in the drives properties, and thats ok now.

Any ideas?

Thanks
