i have an .avi file type movie waiting to be burnt to DVD, will this .avi movie play normally on a stand alone DVD player or will i need to convert the file type?

I believe some DVD players can play .avi directly. But normally you have to convert to MPEG if you want to view on the telly. Roxio and Nero DVD burning software (and others) can do this for you. You don't just drag-and-drop the .avi files to DVD; you go into the "Create a DVD" option (or whatever it's labelled on your burner) and work from there.

Yes, there are some that willcope with AVI, this one for example:

But if you're not sure of your player, best convert to MPEG2.

Unless your DVD player supports avi video (divx, xvid, etc), you'd have to convert it to mpeg or you can convert it to DVD format (VOB). Seraching google for avi to DVD or avi to VOB, will return plenty of results. Some software will be free while some will only convery a fraction, others only till ti expires, etc. but have a look around.
