The DVD maze

I'm about to transfer my library of home videos on to DVD. My question is - will the resulting DVD be compatible on a US DVD Player? No doubt this question has been covered before, so apologies if it's 'old hat'

I think that you will have to convert your films to region 1 DVD unless your American player is multi region.

The region settings are added to commercial DVDs to prevent them being played abroad. It makes no difference to non commercial disks. The DVD player should be able to translate the coding of your disk into a format suitable for your television set.

The coding on a DVD is independent of the television system that is is played on. That is how DVDs are able to play on computers which often have no television decoders installed.
