If I buy a DVD drive will it allow me to copy,as a back up, my vast collection of dvds of programes eg Star trek (dont laugh) inspector morse etc

Technically, it is possible and can be done.

Legally, copying of copyrighted materials in any form for any purpose is ILLEGAL.

yes I mean Tv programmes I only want to back them up and I want to know if a dvd drive will do that or do I need something extra

Suppose you own the copyright of materials or you have got permission to copy them, a dvd writer with burning software are all you need.

Most kosher burning software will not allow you to pirate commercial DVDs as they will not breach the copy protection. You will need something like this (theoretically)click here
