It could well be that the CD laser has given up the ghost but the DVD equivalent is still OK.

The only driver you need is the generic Windows CDROM driver for all such drives, including CD, DVD and rewriters.

i had similar problems lately with a year an a half old combo drive refusing to read some cdrs or audio discs but was still playing dvds ok.

i started to have problems with the drive a few months back when it took two or three attempts at loading the cdr or music discs to get it to read.it stopped reading the discs alltogether a few weeks back and i purchased a new cd writer.very cheap to replace.

you could try uninstalling the drive via device manager and restarting the computer.windows will find the drive again and will automaticaly install the drivers again.may work but i doubt it.

also maybe try a lens cleaner just in case.

could be a long shot , but worth a try ... back up all the files you need to save . then reformat your puter . could be better than buying a new hard drive . but like a say , it's a long shot

do you reckon a sledge hammer will do the job.

Dont forget to take it out of the case before you try it.

dont destroy it!

if it still plays dvds then keep it in the mean time for this purpose and just buy a cd writer.replace with a dvd rom or writer when it dies completely.
