I might be missing something really obvious here but for some reason my DVD drive on my home PC will no longer read DVD discs.

It will read, cds, cd roms ect but when a DVD is inserted it will just give a message telling me that the drive is not ready.

I've tried re-installing software but that didnt work. Having only a basic knowledge of PC' any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

The problem exists with all DVD's

A DVD-ROM drive normally has two lasers, one for CDs and one for DVDs.

It sounds as though the DVD laser might have given up the ghost.

A new DVD-ROM drive is less than £20 these days.

Stuartli is correct, it perfectly possible for one of the lasers to go and for the other to work ok as it seems to be in your case. Before you bin it though try cleaning it with a DVD lens cleaning disk you can pick them up in most stores and supermarkets for about a fiver, and if it doesn't work you can still use it on your home DVD player presumming you have one of course.

If you need to get a new dvd-rom, why not get a dvd writer, it does not cost much more. The award winning NEC 2500 only costs £55 click here
