If you know that the DVD drive from the old machine works ok then try reinstalling or updating your reading software whatever it is.

have tried updating the driver but still the same, is there anything else i can try.

In one the DVD laser has probably gone kaput and the CD laser in the other - perhaps that's why it was replaced originally?

Optical drives use the basic Windows CDROM driver which is automatically installed.

but it worked ok in the other pc before i took it out.

Try different reading software ie Power DVD 5.

Can you view the files on the DVD in Windows Explorer?

If not then the DVD laser is probably kanckered and you need to replace the drive.

I am not sure if I have this right, but if you are trying to play DVD using Windows Media it will not play DVD only CD's. you need another program with that ability.

Windows Media player 11 will play a dvd,but will not rip or burn a dvd, you need another burning program such as Nero/Sonic/Roxio etc.

Can you view the the disc via My Computer ?

If so,right click and you will be given options of which program to open the disc with, normally WMP if it is set as yoyr default player,or possibly something else.

If it is not viewing in My Computer, you could try this:

Missing cd/dvd drives can be normally associated with the removal of burning software such as Nero/Roxio/Sonic/Easy CD Creator etc.
And not showing the drive in My Computer.

First thing to try is to reinstall your burning software.
If no joy, follow the helplines below.

Try the below link ,if still no luck follow the Procedure of removing the upper and lower filters.

3. clicking the "+" next to it.)
4. Expand the "SYSTEM" Key
5. Expand the "CurrentControlSet" Key
6. Expand the "Control" Key
7. Expand the "Class" Key
8. Please look for a key containing the following string of letter and numbers:
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
9. High light this key by left clicking once on it
10. On the right hand side you are looking for "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" under the "Name" column, once you find these please delete them by right clicking on them and choosing "delete"
11. Please exit the registry by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the screen

Reboot your computer

If in any doubt editing the registry, please create a System Restore point first.
