DVD Drive will play-then wont play

Whatever type of disc I put in my DVD drive it shows a blinking light on the drive tray and the icon on screen shows that there is a CD in the drive however it only autoplays around 15% of the time. If I open 'My Computer' the message is 'Please insert a disc in drive'. Is this a configuration problem or a problem with the mechanics of the drive?

Try opening the case and checking that the ide cable is securely attached to the drive/mobo and also try uninstalling/deleting the drive from device manager. Then restart windows, this should detect the drive and reinstall the drivers for it.If this dosent cure the problem you could try using a lens cleaning disc but you may well be looking at a failing dvd drive.

Good advice by gudgulf.

From a software angle try this:

Thanks for the advice. Tried them so looks like a failed DVD drive.
