I am trying to install a dvd drive. I am using the ribbon cable and plugs that were attached to a cd rom drive that is installed but i do not intend to use again. When i re-start the computer the green light on the new drive flashes but the floppy drive green light does not flash. windows then a refuses to load and asks for boot disc. when i disconnect the new drive the floppy works and windows loads. I cannot understand what is wrong as the floppy is not connected to the same cable as the new drive.

Have you still got both connected to the IDE cable? Have you set one to be master and the other slave?

Are you sure you havent dislodged the Hard drive cable?

The reason the system will not boot up is that the hard drive is not working correctly - probably because you have the DVD drive and hard drive on the same cable, and you have not set the master/slave jumper correctly on your DVD drive.

Ideally, you should put the DVD drive on a different cable to the hard drive - almost all system have two IDE cable connectors on the motherboard, so you only need to buy a new IDE cable.

The floppy drive is not working smply because the system is not booting up, most probably - get the DVD settings correct, and all should be well.
