DVD Decoder

When I try to play a DVD on my PC (Windows XP) I get a message saying "Windows Media player cannot play the DVD becuase a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer". Somebody has suggested a free download called "KODEC". But I'm a bit reluctant. Would that be wise and safe? Or is there a better alternative?
