My pc has the above specs, yet I cannot burn DVD on it. The NEC writer burns cds no probs, it plays DVD with no probs, yet it refuses to burn DVD. I am trying to burn to Maxell DVD + RW 120 min video, the files I am trying to burn are WMV, AVI, MPEG, etc.

Do I have to alter the format to burn them? If so, how?

DVD is MPEG2 format.

You need a program to edit and change format for burning, try Microsoft Movie Maker, part of XP package although there are better ones. Also this site might be helpful.
