after using 2 different programs to convert / a reduction in quality and a black border around the footagehas appeared any ideas or help wud be much appreciated

TMPGEnc will convert Vob files to Mpeg, click here with no loss of quality.

I think the reason you have black borders is that you have letterboxed the footage (so it appears in widescreen view)I am no expert but there may be an option to change the output setting from I think 16:9 to another lower number cant remember 4:3 or something like that .Reduction in quality could be the settings for the codex you are using to convert AVI.If you are able trying increasing quality settings.My knowledge is limited but there are others who can advise better.

premier 1.5 was the program used that changed it to a vob file.... yasa to change i tback.. also tried a dvd ripper and it did the same thing..
