I run XP pro and played dvd's quite happily but now i'm getting the following:
Playback failed due to a problem with the video subsystem. Lowering your screen resolution or color depth may fix the problem .
Neither solution works, any ideas?
Also where do i check to see if the correct codecs are still installed? What software installs them?

You could try re-installing the software that you use to play your DVD's. You may have recently had an incorrect shutdown and some strings may have been lost.
