You will need a firewire card and cable in order to get the video from your camcorder to the computer. If your camcorder has DV-in then look for software that can transfer the edited video back to the camcorder (Adobe Premiere does this).

As for the software, I use Adobe Premiere but it is complex. Pinnacle do a good one (so I've heard).

If you do a search for video editing in the helproom then you should find quite a few threads with software recommendations.

Hope this helps

I have been using Pinnacle Studio as software through a Pinnacle DV firewire card with a Sony Mini DV camera for 2 years. Studio is very interactive and with the transitions, stills, titlea and sound capabilities produces brilliant movies. Only problem need large hard drive as full quality video takes 12gb per hour of film.

I would recommend Pinnacle as a value-for-money starter. I believe it's cheaper than the others such as Ulead and Adobe, and you can buy it with the capture card included. It's very simple to use when it's working properly -- but the one problem you'll see in this forum is that it seems to be quite fussy about the PC specification. I have a 600Mhz Athlon with 256Mb ram and a separate 80Gb HDD for video files (that stores about 2 1/2 hours, so I'm not sure about Zep's figure of 12Gb per hour). On my setup Pinnacle won't record the edited movie back to the camera properly (there were some threads about this problem within the last couple of days), but I can record to VCD or DVD so no problem.

One most important thing needed is plenty of time and patience!
