DUN and networking

I have a customer with a small network, W98SE on clients,NT4 on server. A few of the clients have internet access via their own telephone line and their own internal modems ie not via the server (customers choice. Networking protocol is TCP/IP. Probelm is when those clients with internet access activate a piece of software that accesses a piece of telephone recording equipment whose software on the server, the DUN box appears. The work-round I've used is to set i/n connection properties to NOT dial and make connection manually. Is this something that has a neater solution or at least can anyone explain what's happening.
