Dual Screens

I have an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro with DVI and analogue connections running XP Pro.

My question is: if I connect two screens can I use the screens to operate separate software. e.g. one with word and say the other with Excel. Or is the second screen just for display purposes only. If I can, How does the mouse work on both screens? is the a switch to swap from one to the other?

You can open multiple applications just as if you had one screen and then drag the window with that app across to the second screen. The mouse will just move from one screen to the other as you move it from left to right.
