Dual Layer DVD Writer

I'm buying a DVD writer this week and I was wondering about the dual layer drives. If I copied (for backup purposes) a full DVD (i.e. a film) that is dual layer format (the ones that say there may be a slight pause) - would that mean I could fit the lot on a disc? More importantly, would it play in a DVD player?

I have seen the other postings on this forum about dual layer drives but didn't notice anything about this. I read that it's only for +R media - are there others that do it on -R? If so, what's my best bet for compatibility with other players?

The drive I have in mind is the NEC DV-2510.
