Drop down file option menu in file open

Previously, using Windows XP, "file open" in any program produced a drop down menu - typing "a" then produced all the files beginning with "a" "ab" restricted the list to file names starting "ab" etc. Very useful if you know what you are looking for! Initially in Vista a similar system operated for a few weeks - then stopped - I suspect a Registry cleaner was too "efficient" Any ideas how I get it back again - possibly by a tweak in the Registry?
Thanks for any help/pointers.
