Driving me NUTS

I had a digital card reader (usb) on my pc, and it developed a fault. I have purchased a new one and when I plug it in, the power light comes on. I look in the bios under mass storage devices and it states 2 drives have been detected. This is a 10 in 1 reader so maybe it's correct to have detected 2 drives. However, I go into xp pro and nothing is detected. I reboot with it connected, nothing. I plug it in while in xp, nothing. In disk management, only the hard drive, cd-rom are detected. I have a feeling some software or driver is blocking it. I even tried remapping the cd-rom to R in case it was a drive letter conflict. Is there a good registry tool maybe which removes unused hardware? or does anyone PLEASE have any suggestions.
