Hi All,

Trying to update the drivers for my SIS graphics card and i am getting into a mess

and the new drivers can't install.

Right then... system info:

Computer Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition OS Service Pack

Service Pack 1
Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106 (IE 6.0 SP1)
DirectX 4.09.00.0900 (DirectX 9.0)

Motherboard
CPU Type Intel Pentium 4A, 2800 MHz (21 x 133)
Motherboard Name MSI MS-6533EG/XG (3 PCI, 1 AGP, 1 CNR, 2 DIMM, Audio,

Video)
Motherboard Chipset SiS 651
System Memory 224 MB (PC2100 DDR SDRAM)
BIOS Type Award (04/10/03)
Communication Port Communications Port (COM1)
Communication Port ECP Printer Port (LPT1)

Display
Video Adapter SiS 650_651_M650_740 (32 MB)
3D Accelerator SiS 315 Integrated
Monitor Proview 772 (FAQC2A0423601)

Multimedia
Audio Adapter SiS 7012 Audio Device

Storage
IDE Controller SiS 5513 IDE UDMA Controller
Floppy Drive Floppy disk drive
Disk Drive ST360012A (60 GB, 7200 RPM, Ultra-ATA/100)
Optical Drive IDE DVD-ROM 16X (16x DVD-ROM)
Optical Drive MITSUMI CR-48XETE (48x/12x/48x CD-RW)

So then i go onto the sis download page and run a 'detect chipset' ... results are

as follows:

North Bridge Chipset: 651
South Bridge Chipset: 962/962L
External Graphic Card ( Standalone GPU ):

Integrated Devices:

Integrated Graphic Processor: 651
AGP: SiS Acceleration Graphic Port
IDE: SiS IDE Controller
USB:USB 1.1 x 3
USB: USB 2.0
Audio: SiS7012 Audio Controller
LAN: SiS900 Fast Ethernet Controller

For each of the first three options I can download updates.

For the Graphic Processer

and i download the 650_222_win2kxp.zip v2.22 (18,494KB) file

For the SIS AGP click here
I download the latest agp117.zip v1.17 (5,378KB) files

For the IDE

I download the ide204a.zip v2.04a (5,432KB) files/

So then i have uzipped the downloads and go through the install process....

First the Processer install. This starts to installs the SiS Compatible VGA

multimedia package V2.22. Half way through the install a

'InstallDrriverforPlugandPlaydevices' error window pops up. I click 'ok' and then

it carrys on and completes.

Then i install the IDE204a. Which installs ok (after rebooting the system).

Now i try and and update the AGP drivers to the new SiS AGP Driver Set-up r1.17. So

i click th einstall icon and it starts to install - but the same

InstallDrriverforPlugandPlaydevices' error window pops up. When i click ok -

another 'severe' window pops up saying the installed as failed to installed the

windows XP AGP.

So then, now i don't have a device driver for my AGP (doesn't show in my system

devices). I can try to do a manual install and it asks me that the file SISAGPX.SYS

file is needed. I can find the file in the v1.17 folder but not sure if this is

correct (or what it does or if it is specific to a version) as the initial v1.17 install process failed. (Similar problems occur if i try and install earlier

versions (i.e. 1.15)

I can try to update to an already existing driver manually but not sure if these are

correct or latest (i suspsoe the latest would be created from the 1.17 install).

Anyway - bit of a long one this. Anyone have any ideas or advice on how i can

install the 1.17 drivers without it failing. I am planning to get a cheap graphics

card which will hopefully bypass this problem. But if i can getthe fixed that will

be great.

If u get this far - thanks for reading.

Spencer.

you stated above that you have a SIS 651, and you are trying to load SIS 650?

I would go to device manager and remove the graphics driver, reboot m/c and let the device wizard find new drivers, if it says it can't find the driver and wants to look for it on the internet, let it! I've Done this before with no problems

Thanks for reply,

Looking at the SiS site - the S651 is supported by the downloads (their chipset detection program pointed to these downloads). I uninstalled the drivers for the AGP grahics port (not too sure if this is the same as you have suggested). But when i reboot system it just asks me for the SISAGPX.SYS file which i have to chose. Once i select one it finishes the update. I can't get it to look at the internet to check for drivers even when i try to do a manual update. I getthe odd serious error suggesting my device drivers need updating on my graphics card - hence the reason why i am doing this.

i use the generic sis drivers for my chipset and ide as my pc manufacturer does not keep them up to date and i have never had a problem.

i dont use the graphic drivers as i have an agp card but make sure you are installing the correct drivers as above.

try click here for the sis651

try click here for the sis661fx version

  hugh-265156 00:43 24 Apr 04

please disregard my first link above as its for the 651 which would be wrong.

only thing available is the 661fx,see second link above.

sorry.

Using the drivers that the SiS web suggest don't seem to work so i am pretty sure that the 661 wouldn't work either (not sure though).I think i will get a new grahpics card and see if this fixes my problem.

Thanks.

Try installing in safe mode

  spencer boy 00:59 27 Apr 04

Tried that but with no luck - i can install the AGP 1.12 drivers that came with the pc but when i try the 1.15 or 1.17 drivers contained in the download it fails the install as detailed in a previous post. So at the moment i have the old 1.12 drivers installed. This does cause problems with crashing so i would imagine that the 1.15 and 1.17 drivers can not be installed for my onbaord graphics card. Looks like i will have to get a new graphics card (i will order it tomorrow)and see if this cures my problem.

Thanks.
