a driver service for this device has been disabled

I'm looking at a friends machine , Hewlwtt Packard Imedia. It came to me with a ton of viruses on. I,ve cleaned them all off and a lot of spyware. It looks like some of them have done some damge as we can't access the dvd drive. There is an exclamtion mark against it in contol panel / system. We thought it was faulty at first and bought a Pioneer dvd rewriter but that has the same problem. if we look at the error code we get" a driver (service) for this device has been disabled. an alternative driver may be providing this functionality. Code 32.
Is it likely that a virus could have caused this and any ideas how to put it right?
The system 32 folder also pops up straight away on boot.

From the drive's Properties in Device Manager is the menu configured to Enable Use of this Device?
