*** Driver for non existing hardware? ***

  AudioVic' 15:25 01 Mar 04

Does anyone know what causes XP to try to install a non existing piece of hardware?

When looking in device manager, The yellow "?" is there.

Everything works fine: All hardware that exists.

On boot up, the new hardware wizard keeps appearing.

I have stopped it temporarily by disabling the device or whatever it is in device manager.

Any help would be appreciated

what does it say it identifies? and what does the device manager list it as?

That's the problem!

It doesn't list the device and in device manager, it is just a yellow "?" saying OTHER device.

The question mark is telling you that there is a problem, "other device" is telling you that Windows doesn't know what it is!

I think it is most likely that some hardware isn't completely installed and that it is a feature of a card that is working in it's primary function, such as the voice component of a voice/fax modem.

will it let you uninstall it from device manager.?

  johnnyrocker 16:05 01 Mar 04

surely it will re appear on re boot

yes it will, but i,m hoping it may tell him what the hardware is, if it is completely uninstalled.

Your idea about the modem sparked an idea in my head.

It turned out to be the Ethernet adapter which was installed inadvertantly with my Fax modem.

All the very best to you all

Wishing you all happy trouble free PCing.
