Driver Hell

  chris_db 19:36 29 Feb 04

My PC automatically restarts up to four times when I turn it on.

Microsoft error reporting tells me I have a dodgy driver.

Is there anyway of easily testing to find out which one is the problem?

Srart/Control Panel/Admin Tools/Event Manager should give you a clue.

type msconfig in the run command. click on startup
and uncheck the start up programs then reboot
if the pc starts normally then run msconfig and
check one programe after each reboot do this untill the pc
goes wrong remember witch program caused the problem then leave unchecked.

Gave it a try but no joy. Still seems to be some driver or other, not a startup program?

I think I may format the drive and re-install.

try this may help

disable the "Automatic Restart" option in Windows XP,

Right click My Computer --> Properties --> Advanced --> Startup and Recovery Settings --> Disable Automatic Restart near the bottom

If it solves it just leave it like that.

Also check memory, Xp is set to auto restart when dumping memory.

If you have 512 in two sticks try removing one and restarting, then try the other, just could be a faulty one, though if this has just stated happening it's probably nothing to do with that.
