drive read error

  sputnick 16:30 29 Dec 10

I have been having drive read errors recently.
This first time I ended up getting a replacement drive from WD as they siad there was a fault.
But since then I have had it a few times and can`t get into the system. Just get press Ctrl-Alt-DEL which goes into a loop of the error.
There appears to be no way of getting into the system using F8.
The only way I can get it sorted is to boot from my repair disc using bios.
The problem seems to happen after I have bee using a program that doesn`t shut down properly.
The screen goes transparent and the rotating icon just goes round.
Last time it happened and I was using Solitaire in Windows games.
Any suggestions please.

Using W7 64bit system
4Gb ram
2 x 500 Gb sata drives.
