i have to restart my computer 3 0r 4 times before it recognises drive d drive e is my writer master drive drive d is the slave it takes an age to get going

Try disconnecting (one at a time) either CD device.

Have had similar trouble recently when one was dying and tended to drag the other with it.

If you find that removing one drive allows the other to behave, you have your answer.
