"Drive not accessible" - Hardware or Software?

I can read/write CD's and read DVD's on my combi drive - but cannot write DVD's. I get various error messages such as:

"Drive D is not accessible"
"Please insert a blank disc and try again" when a blank DVD-RW disc is already in.

I have tried to write allsorts & all ways > *.mpeg; *.jpeg; *.doc and using Pinnacle Studio Plus "Make Disc", Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD, Media Player 10, CyberLink Power DVD.

There is nothing in Device Manager or Properties that suggests any malfunction, so I am not sure where to turn or what I have overlooked. The short holiday movie I am trying to write has gone on to CD successfully using Pinnacle Studio, so it looks like hardware but how can I check this? Thanks.

Assuming your burning software is Nero 6/7, then you should format the DVD RW using Nero InCD software before recording on these.
Some DVD-RW drives do not read poor media. In that case buy decesent media.

Fair point about cheap discs, but these are Philips brand from Dixons so should be good enough.

I do not have Nero, but [unless someone knows better] I do believe that one of the 3 packages I have ought to write this disc for me?? I certainly do not want to spend anymore on software if I don't have to.

I have Pinnacle, CyberLink PowerDVD plus of course good old standby WMP10.

Are you sure that it can write to DVD?

Many combi drives were/are CD read/write, but DVD read only (if you follow what I mean!). I am sitting next to one such (admittedly quite elderly!) machine now.

Good point.

Seriously, good question, we can do some silly things!

Answer is yes, it is a new Samsung TS-H552, which I installed myself. However - I have never written a DVD, so the problem it is not a breakdown as such, it may be faulty............

Well I don't know the answer but - I think that is the same unit that is in my Freecom external DVD writer (I'll check when I get home tonight). Like you I have never yet written a DVD, so it looks like I might have to do some experimenting!
