during startup after the checks on Pri Master & Sec Master several beeps occur and a message appears saying 'A:drive error press F1 to resume' after pressing F1 the system boots up normally. can anyone shed any light please.

This could be a number of different things, your motherboard manual should explain the significance of the beeps, but the drive itself could be faulty or the ide cable or power cable could be loose. Take the side off your box and check all cables, both ends, and fittings, take the usual anti static precautions.
Just thought-Does the drive actually work once into Windows?

Does the little green light flash on the disk drive as it's booting? If it doesn't check inside to make sure one of the plugs have not become loose. If it does light up, the drive maybe faulty, if you can, try another drive.

Thanks very much Wary & Valvegrid it was in fact the power cable which had worked loose.
