Downloading Windows Updates & Installing

I run Windows XP.
Twice I have downloaded the Critcal Updates as advised by Microsoft in Windows Updates. On both occasions after successfully doing the download for twenty minutes on each occasion I have been asked to Install the files. I did not wish to be reminded later). Clicking on Yes I have after a few minutes disconnected the telephone as I reason the connection is not wanted at this stage. On both occasions I was asked to re-connect, which I did, but the Installation appears to have worked anyway. My question is- has the telephone connection to be maintained whilst the files are Installing ?

I think the answer is yes, mine does anyway. If you re-connected in time it will have installed OK.
