Download video from a JVC GR-D340EK DV camcorder

I have a DV camcorder which I have been trying to download from to my pc using a Firewire card and cable installed on my PC. The capture medium I am using is Ulead VideoStudio 8.0, which came bundled with the Firewire card. When I follow the instructions to capture and download video from the camcorder, a caption pops up saying that the video will be captured in Hi-Mat format, which I understand can only be read by certain laptops and PC's but not by standard DVD players - I am now at the limit of my understanding here, can anybody point me in the right direction to download from my camcorder and write to DVD in a standard read format?

If you have windows XP use windows moviemaker to capture then export as dv_avi and burn with Nero or even import back to ulead though 8 is pretty old now
