Double OS installation question

Sorry in advance for the vagueness of details here but I don't have the laptop concerned to hand.

A friend has asked me to try to sort out his Sony Vaio (Vista) laptop which will not boot due to a corrupted Registry file.

So far I've had no success having tried the usual Safe Mode,Last Known Good.. ,etc. Also tried rebooting with the Vista disc and selecting the Repair option but that just hangs indefinitely.

My question,if I re install Vista on another partition would I have access to the original hard drive content (he has a lot of music and photographs he's afraid of loosing) ? If that were possible I could then copy all his files off the laptop, delete the original OS installation and then copy his stuff back on again.

Any advice of guidance would be very much appreciated.

Neil
