When I double click on a folder all my icons are wiped off the screen, taskbar included and I have to restart to get them back, although all other programmes still appear to be running as normal.Desktop running XP Pro...Norton,AVG,NTL,Spybot anti virus installed.

when the taskbar is there at the bottom of your screen right click on it > Properties > in Taskbar appearance put a tick in 'Keep the taskbar on top of other windows' also put tick in 'Show Quick Launch' There should NOT be a tick in 'Auto-hide the taskbar' if there is then click on it to remove the tick. You can also if you want tick the 'Lock the taskbar'
