the regedit will not run

This suggests that you may not have got rid of the virus since it disables regedit click here

If you have Windows ME or XP you need to disable System Restore click here

Which anti-virus did you use to try to remove it?

Go into Safe Mode and run System File Checker (SFC) by typing SFC into Run.

SFC should find the missing or corrupted files and prompt you to reinstall them.

I can't find any references to smssau.exe

Shouldn't that be sfc /scannow (with a space)?

smssau.exe is probably the virus. It sound like the error you get when the virus has gone but the start up command is still there.

whitejoefish - Start Menu, Run... Type MSCONFIG and hit enter. StartUp tab, find the entry that referrs to smssau.exe and uncheck it.

Reboot and message shouldn't appear.
