documents & settings have gone

My computer (Windows XP) wouldn't start yesterday, so started in safe mode. Did a system restore to 2 days previously. Then 'checking file system on C' came on and said that my documents and settings were completely unreadable and that they would be completely removed. I don't appear to have a virus. I have searched for my files/folders (including hidden) and can't find any. Word also uninstalled itself, as did my e-mail settings.
Have checked hard drive space and 15.9Gb has been used which was what it was before the files/folders went.
Please help - thanks!
