Do I need a new Hard Drive?

I have a 2 year old laptop. Recently the light which shows when the hard drive is working has started ticking and flashing more. The ticking is getting on my nerves!

Does this mean it is about to pack up?

Is it making more noise? If so, I'd make sure your data is backed up.

You could try defragmenting the drive just in case it is thrashing about between tracks, but if that doesn`t work then it really would be a good idea to backup as Kate B says.

I had another thought. Have you listened to the fan to see if that is the culprit?

How much Ram does it have?.

Thanks all.

Yes, more ticking.

Defraged, but no difference.

Fan seems OK.

I have 512 RAM, but plenty of space left.

I am told there is a free programme on the Hitachi web site which checks hard drives to see if they are OK. I went there, but it all looked a bit complicated to me. Will have to go there again when my brain is in better working order. Anyone know how I check if my hard drive is OK?

The ticking is the hard drive. That the drive is ticking indicates that it is on it's last legs. you need to back-up your data and get a new drive fitted. Once a drive has started ticking, sooner or later, it will fail altogether.
