Do I need another firewall

  jonmac 07:54 26 Oct 14

The other day it was pointed out to me that my router, a Thomson Gateway from Plusnet, has a built in, enabled, firewall. That being the case do I really need another one such as the Zone Alarm or Windows firewalls which I have used at various times over the years or would the router firewall be sufficient?

Keep the Windows Firewall as well.

Thanks for the response, John, but why?

Here's an article ClickHere that goes a little way to explain.

"There are two types of firewalls: hardware firewalls and software firewalls. Your router functions as a hardware firewall, while Windows includes a software firewall. There are other third-party firewalls you can install, too."

to put it simply

router firewall only blocks incomming stuff

windows firewall (not xp) will block outgoing stuff aswell

this stops nasties, that you may have downloaded as part of another download package, from transmitting information back to te hacker.
