Do I Install MS Office 2007 Security Update?

  Fastflys 10:13 19 Apr 10

I have MS Office 2003 installed. In order to open and read/write Office 2007 documents I downloaded the “Widget” from Microsoft’s own website. Everything is working correctly.

Amongst the latest MS security updates notification is one security update for MS Office 2007 [KB981715]. I didn’t install it as I don’t have Office 2007, however I keep getting notified that this security update is available.

My questions are: Am I being told to install this Office 2007 update because I’ve installed the “Widget” which allows Office 2003 to open and read/write Office 2007 documents? Will installing this Office 2007 security update cause me any problems?

I also use MS Office 2003 and updated with the “Widget” to allow reading of documents in 2007 format. The update (KB981715) was offered to me also. On checking I found it was for stability and some fixes (presumably as a direct result of installing the “Widget”) so I installed it. To date I have found no problems from it and both Office 2003 and 2007 documents are fine.

Thanks for your prompt response.

Just wanted to check out what other people had done before going ahead with the install.

I feel that if it is offered it must be linked to what you have already installed in most cases.
