DNS Error/page cannot be..... home page change

Hi all, not so much a problem but a does anyone know why this happened.

Troubleshooting fathers computer over the phone today.

Established there was an internet connection with a ping test.

Confirmed this by retrieving email.

IE 6 would only display DNS Error/page could not be displayed page.

Confirmed browser apparently not online by trying two more sites typed directly into browser.

Looked at tool/internet options, discovered that home page had been changed. Changed homepage back to bbc.co.uk and browser resumed normal service.

Updated AVG and left it scanning, he has gone off for his flu jab!

Foolishly did not ask what homepage had been changed to, know that the address ended /dnserror.

Any clues/ experiences?

Thanks, Epirb.

From experience checking for Spyware and Malware is always the first thing to do when problems with P.C.B.D. 'Spybot Search and Destroy' is good - make sure you run the updater after you have downloaded the program from -

When all is sorted out, do try Super Antispyware. They have a usefull facility that does not allow a change to the Home Page unless through their security pages. Sorry, but can't find their web address, try Google. All the best!
