As I don't want to do this cvery often I thought I'd ask is there a free file converter from DivX to something that will play on any dvd player

If you already have nero 6 or 7 you can convert it with that.

Doesn't it tak a very long time in Nero?

I have Nero 7 but I've never used the programme to coinvery Video files.

What is the best way to do this?

nero 7 is faster than any dedicated programme.
It takes about 5-7mins to convert a 700mb avi video file to dvd.add to this the burn time of course.I used to use vso divx to dvd which took about 80mins.
to convert divx or avi to dvd...
open nero and on the left side of the main panel choose nero recode, then the top option>recode an entire dvd to dvd.> import dvd, then browse to your divx video and double click the folders until nero loads it then press ok.
make sure you select your dvd writer as your destination.
temp files will go into nero's recode folder whilst convertig.
