DIV sizing

I have a DIV arrangement where I have a DIV in-line and widthed across the full parent DIV and inside this DIV I have two DIVs floated so they are side by side. I am using their parent to provide a background image (repeat-x) but when displayed in FFox (my default test browser) the DIV does not expand and just hangs around collapsed at the top (showing it's 2px borders).

Question is how do you get a DIV which is just used to give a background via an image say, to expand to the height of the image?

I'm not a CSS wizard but I think...

As the two inner divs are floated they don't fill the containing div therefore it has no height.

You could:
1. Give the containing div a height or
2. nly float one of the inner divs
