Distorted Windows XP icons

I have recently purchased a new desktop pc running Windows XP. I am using an older Dell CRT monitor. I am getting pink lines distorting several icons in various programs. e.g in control panel and file transfer windows. These seem to predominantly occur where the icon is a button and varies depending on what windows appearance I use. The problem does not occur with any desktop icons.

Could there be a problem with my windows installation?

Try the latest drivers for the graphics card and the monitor.

Or check the resolution - it may be too high.

If Diodorus Siculus's suggestions don't work, try repairing the icons using PowerToys or TweakUI.

Or better still, try the repair option first of all!

Thanks for the suggestions. It turned out that I had a faulty graphics card which has been replaced and the problem is now resolved.
