Distorted graphics on Notebook

Among my daughters' presents yesterday was the Sims game. This plays fine on our desktop PC but when played on our notebook (Centrino 1.5 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, Radeon 9000 64MB graphics card)the graphics distort in the form of horizontal lines moving down the screen.
Sims website suggests it may be cured by 'lowering video hardware acceleration to basic'. Any views on this, and if so, how do I do it as their instructions apply to Windows 98 not XP?

Compatabilty test was fine so tried ATI website for updated driver but they won't supply to final user and recommend I contact notebook manufacturer - my next move. Thanks
