  gel 12:03 25 Oct 10

I wish to dispose of a desk top which is about 9 years old but still working (slowly)

Could some one advise how I can remove my personal

data with out taking out Windows XP home edition

I am considering giving it to some charity..Can you suggest how I go about this.

It would have to be collected.

Location West Midlands

Thank you

Microsoft Easy Transfer (click here, you may have to validate windows) for transferring your data

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > File and Settings Transfer Wizard

That's for transferring. The safest way is to remove the hard drive. However a file eraser is fairly safe. Try something like Eraser click here

A 9 year old desktop is best disposed of by allowing the parts to be recycled via the local council or other disposal centre

Before doing that, remove the hard drive and either keep it or physically destroy it

As you say, it's working slowly. For a charity it is probably not going to be of great advantage

Thank you very much for your helpful advice

Since I am getting a new desk top, disposing of the old one seems a sensible way forward, after removing the hard drive

Thank you
