display setting at lowest

just formatted and reinstalled xp home sp 2 on acer laptop, unfortnately I cannotchange the display settings, they are set at:
Display 800 x 600
colour quality 4 bit (lowest)
the slider will not move from the lest dise so cannot increase the 800 x 600
and the colour quality set at lowest is the only option, going into control panel, dispaly properties, monitor, everything is greyed out,
all suggestions gratefully accepted

must get a pc that can spell

Are your motherboard and graphics drivers installed? Download from the Acer website if they're not.

thanks seekit and OTT_B, having problems finding the drivers, Acer website doesn't appear to show this model, it is an older model, Acer TravelMate 283XC, still searching, will let you know when I get sorted, I appreciate your help

have a display of 1024 x 768, colour quality - highest (32bit)
have reinstalled before but never had this problem, all help and advice greatly appreciated
