"disk read error"

I went off to uni this evening leaving my machine running Norton full system scan.
When I returned the machine was clicking away at a screen that's presented just after the DMI Pool verification.

"A disk read error occured.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to rest".

The drive makes a hell of a racket. Is it for the bin?

What's the liklihood of being able to salvage the contents?

It's a Maxtor ATA-133 120Gb Diamond Pro thingy.

If you think it might be on the way out download and run the above, it will run various tests on the drive.

Thanks.

It says the drive is failing (an understatement if you ask me).

I'll buy a drive tomorrow and just hope that I can salvage some of the contents - but with it refusing to read/bott from it this isn't a good omen for that.

I can see me digging out the Mesh Recovery CD... again.
