Question: What is a hard drive partition?
Answer: A portion of a hard disk that functions as though it were a physically separate disk. On a PC, a new hard disk must be partitioned before it can be formatted for the operating system.

Further to above:

A hard drive will normally be seen as the C: drive. If it has two partitions then the second one will normally be seen as D: drive, relegating other drives e.g. CD-Rom down the alphabetical list.

An advantage of having 2 or more partitions is that the operating system and program files can be installed to one partition and data files, backups to another. This means that if the O/S becomes corrupt or unstable and has to be reinstalled from scratch then the data files are not lost.
