Disk I/O Error Message.......pls help!!!

Hello all, i was trying to do a restore to factory settings to a friends dell inspiron 8600 laptop pc..as it was infected with a virus.....and the following message has come up...Disk I/O error, replace ths disk, and then press any key.

Is there any solution to this pls....shes had the latop for 3 years now..she dont mind to lose everything on her laptop, as long as we can get it to work!!!

This happens when the pc/dvd drive can't read the disc.
Try cleaning the disc to see if it makes a difference.
Try it in another pc to see if that reads it ok,if it does the dvd drive in the laptop could be faulty.
Does the laptop read other discs ok?
Instead of a restore,why not just remove the virus with an anti virus programme?
