Disk I/O error at bootup

Does this mean my machinr is dead? This comes up during the DOS screen during Booting What is wrong?

Lokks like the drive, or the cable, or the motherboard has a fault. Check the cable connections - but suspect the drive. The best way to know for sure is to try another drive in the system.

On bootup I get the message

Disk I/O error

Using a startup floppy I can get to see a list of the folders on the C drive, some of which I need.

I'm sure I can probably FDISK and FORMAT the hard drive and load Windows 95 back on (it's a very old machine) but I'd like to ba able to save some of the data first if possible.
