Disk Format Error On Ext4

I've just been trying to format a brand new WD 6TB drive on Linux via gParted using ext4 for the file system. About a quarter of the way through the hard drive makes a couple of buzzing noises and there is no further progress on the formatting. There is no indication from gParted that the formatting has failed. Strangely, if I format the drive using NTFS as the file system, it appears to complete with no problems. Does this indicate there is a fault with the drive? I wouldn't want to just settle on using NTFS and then start suffering further issues a little further down the road if there's a bigger problem with the drive.
