Disk Check wont run

I'm running a Windows XP Home Laptop and all of a sudden disk check/scan disk wont run in windows, when i try (from the HDD properties box) it says;

'windoes was unable to complete the disk check'

I have recently installed Cryptainer, which created a 100mb volume as part of its function, could this be causing the problem....

It should say would you like it to run it at the next boot, just click yes.

No thats usually happens only when you ask it to scan and fix the file system....

it runs fine in windows with only the 'scan and attempt to repair bad sectors' option selected.

What it says (even when neither is selected) is:

'windows was unable to complete the disk check'

hence this is either a problem with windows, my HD or caused by the proggy i mentioned above. Or possibly something else.

Somebody help!!

when i say it works fine, i mean it used to work fine but now doesn't
