Disk boot failure

I have just experienced a disk boot failure and did try a boot from CD using my Windows XP professional CD and choosing repair, but I then get a message telling me there is no hard disk?
I have nortons virus and firewall and my CPU is an AMD Athlon 2600+. This is the first real problem I have-had any suggestions as I cannot boot up and there is definately a 80Gig hard drive which has been working normally for the past 6 months.

As always try simple things first. Have you checked the internal connections haven't worked loose? Is hard drive detected in BIOS?

Suggest try thse and post back.
